As the annual superyacht boat show endurance marathon begins today in the south of France, I actually recall a time when boat shows were fun. Every February in the ‘60’s (that’s the 1960’s for those in any doubt) my Dad would get permission to take me off from school for the day.

Last Saturday, while off driving a steam locomotive on the Great Laxey Mine Railway  www.laxeyminerailway.im as I do – I may be 57, but that doesn’t mean I’ve grown up, just yet - an email slipped into my inbox almost un-noticed but just in time for the superyacht boat show season .

There seemed to be quite some panic last week among those who sort out VAT for superyachts, certainly those associated with the UK, when a tax notice entitled “Yacht Business Brief from UK”  circulated by email and marked “URGENT” popped up in their inboxes.

It’s official. “Devonport” is to be reborn. Although when its  96-metre “Project 55” puts to sea next year Babcock International ’s  Devonport Royal Dockyard (“DRD”) www.devonport.co.ukwill  soon be out of the business of building superyachts altogether…
