Nikumaroro (previously known as Gardner Island) is a small coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean situated just south of the Equator and just west of the 180th meridian. It lies in the Phoenix Island Chain and is part of the Republic of Kiribati.

Masters of foreign carriers have lost a couple of their worry lines following a "not guilty" verdict in Houston for the master of the Georgios M. He was nabbed under the "magic pipe" law, but the jury disbelieved the crewmembers who claimed to have seen the master use the pipe.

OGX Petróleo e Gás Participações S.A., the largest Brazilian private sector oil and gas company in terms of offshore exploratory acreage, announced today that it has completed the drilling of well 1-OGX-5-RJS, located in block BM-C-43, in the shallow waters of the southern part of the Campos Basin.
