Longtime business and civic leader Yui Hay Lee has joined the Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners. Lee Joins Port of Oakland Commissioner Board

Business and civic leader Yui Hay Lee has joined the Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners.Lee, President and CEO of Oakland-based YHLA Architects, was nominated by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and appointed by the City Council. He was sworn in yesterday to a seat on the seven-member Board, replacing eight-year Board veteran Alan Yee, whose latest term expired.Lee founded his architectural firm in 1980. He served as a Commissioner on the Oakland/Alameda County Coliseum Authority from 2007-2018. Lee was a member of the Oakland Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board under Mayor Jerry Brown.

Hamburg Süd Adds 8,000 New Containers

Container carrier Hamburg Süd said it has taken delivery of more than 8,000 new 40-foot high cube standard containers. The new batch of boxes is part of a larger container order by Maersk Line and has now been delivered by the container factory of Maersk Container Industry (MCI) in Dongguan, China. De Nora BWTS Concludes USCG Testing

De Nora announced that it has completed shipboard testing for its BALPURE ballast water treatment system (BWTS), and intends to make  its submission for United States Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval by the end of 2017. The shipboard testing of  De Nora BALPURE was conducted on a US-flagged Aframax tanker operating in the west coast of the United States in the regulated waters of California and Alaska. The tanker is in normal trading and has been ballasting and deballasting with BALPURE system on a regular basis.

Fitzgerald Named CEO of Maersk’s Container Unit

Sean S. Fitzgerald has been named Chief Executive Officer of Maersk Container Industry (MCI), effective January 1, 2018. MCI develops and manufactures refrigerated containers, dry containers and the Star Cool refrigeration machine for the global intermodal industry and is part of A.P. Moller – Maersk’s Transport & Logistics division. Fitzgerald will assume overall responsibility for the strategic direction and the entire operations of the company including its more than 5,000 employees in three container manufacturing plants in Chile and China and its R&D center in Denmark.

Martin Named Port of Milford Haven Chairman

The Port of Milford Haven announced the appointment of Chris Martin as its new Chairman. Martin has been appointed by the Secretary of State for Transport and will take up the post on August 1, 2017. Born and bred in Pembrokeshire Martin has been Vice Chairman of the Port of Milford Haven for the last four and a half years, a role he will now relinquish to become Non-Executive Chairman of the Port. For the majority of his career he has been an entrepreneur building and then selling pharmacy chains in the South West of England and Pembrokeshire.

Tony Bon: From Yarn Handler to CEO

January of 2017 saw the retirement of one of the veterans of the Samson family. Tony Bon, CEO through 2015 retired as of December 31, 2016. Bon shares his impressions of the time he’s been with Samson and the high points of both the company and the industry it serves. In the Navy they have an expression to describe a captain that moves up through the ranks: “He came up through the hawse pipes.” Bon’s journey to the corner office at Samson is a similar story. In 1974, after leaving Berklee College of Music in Boston, Bon needed a job.

Duluth Port Exec Director Receives Distinguished Service Transportation Award

In recognition for his leadership in the freight transportation and logistics field and contributions to leadership, mentorship and education of future leaders in private sector freight transportation, the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) presented its 2017 William K. Smith Distinguished Service Award to Vanta Coda, executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority. The award was presented at the CTS annual meeting and awards luncheon on Feb. 15, in the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota campus.

Optimistic Ports Outlook for 2017 Great Lakes-Seaway Season

Four cadets at State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College have been awarded Thomas B. Crowley Memorial Scholarships to help further their educational opportunities, Crowley Maritime Corp. announced. Joe Pyne Joins DHT Holdings’ Board of Directors

Crude oil shipper DHT Holdings, Inc. announced today that it has appointed Joseph H. Pyne to its board of directors, expanding the board from three to four independent directors. Bibby HydroMap’s First Apprentice Becomes Category B Certified

Twenty-year-old Emma Lamont has recently graduated top of her Hydrographic Survey Category B course with Skilltrade in the Netherlands. Lamont joined Bibby HydroMap in 2012 as a hydrographic surveying apprentice, and has since played an active role in both data processing and offshore site work with the company throughout the U.K. and Europe. As part of Emma’s CPD plan, the company organised for her to attend the FIG/IHO/ICA International Advisory Board recognised course, which covers all basic and essential competences of a hydrographic surveyor.
