The offshore converter platform, BorWin gamma, has now safely set sail from Dubai and begun its journey to its offshore site in the German part of the North Sea.Through the Gulf of Oman, the 18,000 ton ‘topside’ will pass into the Red Sea before going through the Suez Canal onto the Mediterranean and past Gibraltar. Fire Breaks Out Aboard US Car Carrier
A fire has broken out out aboard the U.S. car carrier Honor in the English Channel while the vessel was en route to Baltimore from Southampton on February 24. “The 21 crew are still on board the vessel and they are safe and well,” said Andy Jenkins, Commander for the U.K. Coastguard. The vessel’s fixed firefighting systems were used to attack the fire and the cargo space has been sealed. The ship’s crew continue to monitor the cargo area. The ship has full maneuverability and has turned back toward Southampton, where it is planned to anchor to the Southeast of the Isle of Wight. U.K.
Rickmers-Linie Supports Low Sulphur Regime, Expects Cost Hike
Rickmers-Linie has declared its support for the introduction of stricter sulphur regulations but expects that it will inevitably lead to an increase in the cost of marine fuels. “While shipping is already the most environmentally friendly mode of transport, the new regulations help to further reduce the impact on the environment and our health,” said Ulrich Ulrichs, Chief Executive Officer of Rickmers-Linie. The new regulations come into effect on January 1, 2015 in the Emission Control Areas (ECA) in the U.S. and Canada as well as the North Sea, English Channel and the Baltic Sea.

Acquired less than two years ago, Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque is a relatively new addition to the group’s worldwide network of ship repair and conversion yards. Originally called Arno Dunkerque, the shipyard was officially renamed Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque on September 1 this year and brings nearly 40 years of experience to Damen Shipyards Group. The 2015 Baltic ECA requirements make the increase in marine casualties inevitable. You can do something about it. The march towards cleaner air in coastal areas is well underway. For example, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amended the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) designating specific portions of U.S., Canadian and French waters as Emission Control Areas (ECA) in 2010. Since August 2012, the use of fuel oil which does not exceed 1.0% sulfur has been required.

CMA CGM to Apply Low Sulfur Surcharge
CMA CGM said it will implement a low sulfur surcharge on all its trades in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and for all cargos as of January 1, 2015. MARPOL Annex VI regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships assign Sulfur Oxides (SOx) Emission Control Areas (ECA) with more stringent controls on sulfur emissions. More than 300 large dry cargo ships are having to wait outside Chinese and Australian ports in a maritime traffic jam that spotlights bottlenecks in China's huge and global commodity supply chain as demand peaks this winter. Global oil and shipping group Monjasa said it has consolidated its physical operations in North Western Europe and in particular in the world’s second busiest waterway, the English Channel. Over the past year, Monjasa has established exclusive oil terminal operations and bunkering facilities in Portland Port, Tongue Anchorage, and set up an office in London. The Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association recently declared the Terminal Weighing Approach (TWA) an industry best practice. The lack of guidelines for shippers about how to comply with the SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) regulation that went into effect on July 1, 2016, has also led to a number of questions throughout the industry. Rotterdam Port CEO "preparing for the worst" with Brexit
The Port of Rotterdam is bracing for a British exit from the European Union without any deal on customs, and looking at measures such as hiring 100 extra customs agents and dozens of fresh produce inspectors. CEO Allard Castelein said he had had two meetings in the past week with "policy makers, the cabinet, the government and supporting officials about the consequences" of a so-called "hard" Brexit, which would move Britain away from EU rules. "If you have 407 days left, then you don't have time to embrace hypotheses that it will turn out pretty good in the end," he told reporters.
Intermarine UK Ramps up Portland Port Operations
Maritime engineering company Intermarine UK is ramping up operations at its new 2,400sqm fabrication and welding facility at Portland Port in Dorset, U.K. after taking delivery of £450,000 of new machinery. Inter Marine Group President Slawomir Kalicki said the Polish-owned company has invested its own cash reserves into the equipment, which include bending machines, welding sets, CNC plasma machines and laser cutters. In addition, Kalicki said since beginning operations in January the company has created 20 jobs, including 15 laborers and five office-based positions.
Cargo Ship EMS Majestic Rescued in English Channel
The Antigua-Barbuda-flagged EMS Majestic began to sink with seven crew on board in the English Channel when it was being towed to safety. The UK Coastguard received a Mayday call at 7.09pm on Sunday from a cargo vessel which was taking in water in the Dover Strait. EMS Majestic reported that they had seven crew on board and were taking on water and sinking 13 miles south east of Eastbourne. A number of vessels transiting the area responded to Mayday Relay broadcast to provide assistance as required.
DFDS to Acquire Turkey's Largest RoRo Operator
Danish shipping and logistics group DFDS has acquired Turkey’s largest operator of Ro-Ro freight ships and will be a major player in the strong and continuously growing trade between the EU and Turkey. U.N. Ro-Ro operates five routes connecting Italy and France with Turkey, 12 ships and port terminals in Trieste and in Pendik, Istanbul. U.N. Ro-Ro employs 500 people. The deal is subject to approval by the authorities. Today, Danish shipping group DFDS signed an agreement to acquire 98.8 % of the shares in the shipping company U.N.

Military veterans will soon have another outlet to channel and share their experiences, on a restored wooden yacht in California, thanks in part to GAC worldwide. The GAC Group’s five regions have donated to support the Wooden Boats For Veterans foundation (WBFV) – an organization that helps veterans harness their power of past military experiences. The foundation currently has two boats in operation and is in the process of restoring a 1938 wooden yacht, ‘Clover’, itself a veteran having seen service in the English Channel during World War II.
Stena Line Extends Ferries Maintenance Contract
Swedish ferry operator Stena Line has renewed its planned maintenance agreement with MacGregor, part of Cargotec. Stena Line has held MacGregor Onboard Care (MOC) agreements since 2008 and its latest contract takes the number of RoRo vessels covered to 39.
