Europa 2’s Cold Ironing Connection Certified by DNV GL

Ultra-luxury cruise ship Europa 2 has had its cold ironing connection certified by classification society DNV GL following testing of the undisrupted use and compatibility of the shore-to-ship power system in the Port of Hamburg.While idled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Europa 2 has been using cold ironing at the Cruise Center Altona in Hamburg for the past 30 days, reportedly marking the first time a cruise ship has been using cold ironing for a long period of time.Europa 2, with a maximum of 500 passengers requires 2.2 megawatts (MW) of power per hour during its lay time.

Leases and Fees Defered at the Port of Hamburg

All tenants of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) in the port of Hamburg can apply for the interest-free moratorium of the building- and land lease for the months April, May and June. Payments can be deferred until December 31, 2020. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg furthermore supports the port industry in the current difficult situation by deferring charges. Ocean carriers, inland shipping companies and port skippers for example are able to request a moratorium for port dues payments for the months of April, May and June.

​Water Drone Christened in the Port of Hamburg

A 1.65-meter-long water drone, also known as unmanned surface vehicle (USV), was christened on Wednesday morning. Port of Hamburg: The Annual Outlook Part 1

In 2020 a lot will happen in the port of Hamburg. Jens Meier, Managing Director of the Hamburg Port Authority, gives an outlook and reports on the major port topics of the year in two episodes of PORT IS WHAT WE DO. In this first episode, he reports on the current status and significance of the major project to adjust the fairway of the Elbe. He also talks about sustainability, which will remain one of the most important topics in the Port of Hamburg in 2020, e.g. supplying ships with shore-side electricity.

Hamburg Port Orders 2 Fireboats

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has ordered two more fire-fighting vessels following the delivery of modern fireboat, the "Branddirektor Westphal".As with the previous order, both vessels will be fitted with Schottel thrusters – in this case, two Schottel Rudderpropellers and one Schottel Transverse Thruster. These will enable maximum maneuverability in the restricted fairway of the Port of Hamburg.This mobility is also guaranteed in situations that require fast response times.

SCHOTTEL to Equip Fireboat Pair

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has chosen SCHOTTEL for two more fire-fighting vessels. Each of the fireboats features two rudderpropellers type SRP 150 L FP (380 kW each) with a propeller diameter of 1.10 m and a transverse thruster type STT 60 FP (100 kW). Cargo Biz Grows at Hamburg Port

Germany’s largest universal port, the Port of Hamburg, reported a container throughput of 7 million TEUs for the first three quarters of this year, representing a growth of 6.9 percent year-over-year.The climb in container handling is primarily attributable to the four new transatlantic services, plus four new Baltic feeder services. St. Pauli Elbtunnel: History Comes Alive

In 2017, Jan-Peter Hein of the Hamburg Port Authority made an unusual find in an attic on the company premises: files full of historical documents and photos of the St. Pauli Elbtunnel, the first ever river tunnel in Europe.The St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel, also called the Old Elbe Tunnel, was considered a technical sensation when it opened in 1911. Today, it is a protected monument and a nostalgic piece of Hamburg history.An exhibition showcasing the uncovered historical documents and photos was created so that the public can experience the history of the St. Pauli Elbtunnel.

Port of Hamburg: Digital Networking Pioneer

Underwater drones, autonomous trucks and paperless customs clearance – the future is already buzzing in the Port of Hamburg.The ‘Digital Networking’ conference run by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) showed how far the port has progressed. “In respect of digitalization, the Port of Hamburg is a worldwide beacon offering many USPs,” emphasized Axel Mattern, HHM’s Joint CEO.Dr. Sebastian Saxe, CDO of Hamburg Port Authority, presented an impressive picture of the digital future in his keynote speech. The port’s rail, road and inland waterway traffic is already digitally guided.

Port of Hamburg Delegation in China

A delegation from Hamburg was in China from 14 to 18 May, visiting companies in Zhengzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) in cooperation with the Hamburg Representative Office in Shanghai, the delegation’s tour was led by Axel Mattern, HHM’s Joint CEO, and Mathias Schulz, its Head of Market Development Asia. The delegation included representatives of TCO Transcargo, Rostock Port, Trelleborgs Hamn, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Hamburg Invest.

Hamburg Port Authority Tests 5G with Deutsche Telekom, Nokia

Hamburg Port Authority has joined forces with Deutsche Telekom and Nokia to test 5G applications at the Port of Hamburg. "Testing of 5G is to commence in an industrial environment in the Port of Hamburg, with the Hamburg Port Authority, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia commissioning an 8000-hectare area with which to carry out key tests of various aspects of 5G functionality, including network slicing," said a press release. 5G will be tested with use cases like traffic lights management, data processing from mobile sensors and virtual reality.

Port Conference Comes to Hamburg

This year’s IAPH World Ports Conference will be held in Hamburg from June 1-5. International representatives from business, politics and science will gather in Hamburg to debate changing demands and alternative actions required in our times of globalization and climate change. The conference will focus on the smartPORT concept developed by the host of the conference, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). During the five-day conference delegates will get to hear about what Hamburg, Europe and the world mean by intelligent port management.

Navigational Changes Needed at Port of Hamburg

“The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig has expressly underlined the necessity for the adjustment of the navigation channel with its decision today,” says Jens Meier CEO of Hamburg Port Authority commenting on the judgement of the Federal Administrative Court for the fairway adjustment of the Lower and Outer Elbe. “The navigation adjustments will come, now it is a question of extending the process. We will concentrate on the questions of possible fluctuations of the salinity of the Elbe and habitat protection impact assessment.

Port of Hamburg Resumes Growth Course

Container throughput achieves 1.0 percent advance in 2016/ Setting a record result for seaport-hinterland rail transport with 2.4 million TEU. In 2016 Germany’s largest universal port achieved a turnaround in seaborne cargo throughput, reaching a total 138.2 million tons in the general and bulk cargo segments. ‘Seaborne cargo throughput in the Port of Hamburg again developed upwards with an increase of 0.3 percent. Stronger general cargo throughput offset a slight downturn in bulk cargo throughput.

German, Russian Groups Partner on Port Digitization

In early April, during the traditional German week in St. Petersburg, a workshop was run with the accent on ‘Digitalization in the port sector and logistics’. It was co-organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), the German-Russian chamber of commerce and the German business Eastern-Europe association. The event also provided a suitable backdrop signing a partnersship and cooperation agreement between Port of Hamburg Marketing and the Admiral Makarov State University for Sea and Inland Waterway Shipping. The ports in Hamburg and St. Petersburg both lie very close to the cities.

UNCTAD Convening Expert Meeting on "Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation"

The UNCTAD secretariat is convening an Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on "Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation: A Challenge for Global Ports", to be held in Geneva on 29-30 September 2011. Following earlier related activities (see www.unctad.org/ttl/legal, under "Meetings"), the two-day meeting aims to provide a platform for expert discussions on how best to improve the understanding of climate change impacts on ports and develop effective and appropriate adaptation response measures.

Climate Change Impacts on Ports and Trade

Ports are likely to be affected directly and indirectly by climate changes, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events and rising temperatures. Climate change and its impact on ports will be the theme of the upcoming United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Expert Meeting that will take place from the 29th to the 30th of September. Port of Hamburg Continues Cargo Records, Adds Jobs

The Port of Hamburg continues record performance handling a total of 72.6 million tons (+ 6.6 percent) in the first six months of 2014. Hamburg’s universal port with 50.7 million tons of predominantly container handling achieves a result of 4.8 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), an increase of 6.8 percent. The largest seaports on the north European continent show an average growth in total handling of 1.8 percent and in container handling of 2.6 percent. The Port of Hamburg can look back on above average growth in container traffic, building up its market share from 25.7 to 26.7 percent.

Hamburg Hosts Conference on Port Rail Cargo

Anticipating further growth in maritime cargo transport by rail, experts from the rail and port sector are going for digitalization and automation. The ‘First Rail Conference on Cargo Transport by Rail and Ports’ brought together numerous experts from the railway network, rail operator, shipowning, terminal and port operation fields. The attendance of 200 filled all available seats in the conference room of the Hotel Baseler Hof. Acceptances on this scale underlined that a rail conference with the focus on freight transport and the ports has been lacking in Hamburg.

First German-Latvian Maritime Forum in Riga

On 19 May, Ziemelblazma Culture Palace in Riga, the Latvian capital was the venue for a meeting between numerous representatives of the Ports of Liepaja, Riga, Ventspils, Lübeck, Kiel and Hamburg. This was hosted by the three Latvian ports and Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM). HPA to Introduce New Port Railway IT System

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) will implement the new Port Railway IT system, transPORT rail, in the night of 27 to 28 September 2014. To keep disruption on the tracks to a minimum, the switchover will take place overnight. The new system is another milestone in the HPA’s smartPORT strategy. Port Tech, Info Sharing Discussed

A group of leading ports from around the globe wrapped up a two-day meeting in Los Angeles this week as part of a maritime collaboration called chainPORT, a global initiative established in 2015 to digitally connect ports worldwide and boost efficiency within the global maritime supply chain. The chainPORT initiative is led by the Ports of Los Angeles and Hamburg Port Authority in Germany, in collaboration with the Global Institute of Logistics. Other ports participating in the third annual meeting are Shanghai, Antwerp, Barcelona, Montreal, Felixstowe, Indonesia and Shenzhen.

Port of Hamburg Offers Environmental Discount

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) said its dedication to pursuing the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental protection led them to joining the Green Award scheme as an incentive provider for seagoing ships. From 2014, oil, product and chemical tankers, LNG and, after a launch of the certification program later this year, LPG carriers, that hold the Green Award certificate are eligible for a 3% reduction in port fees when calling at the port of Hamburg. The port of Hamburg has an active position in promoting safety and environmental consciousness.
