Digital Transformation of Maritime Freight to Reach USD 205bln by 2023

New digitization solutions, such as big data, blockchain, automation, drones, and robotics, are enabling the maritime freight industry to introduce game-changing approaches that will significantly reduce or eliminate non-value-added activities. Over the next five years, maritime suppliers across the value chain will increasingly adopt solutions to address security, overcapacity and accurate cost models, according to new research from ABI Research, a market-foresight advisory firm providing strategic guidance on the most compelling transformative technologies.

Aucoin Joins Schottel as U.S. GM

Gary Aucoin has joined Schottel Inc. in Houma, La., as the new General Manager. Aucoin is a dedicated sales expert taking over leadership of the growing U.S. subsidiary. Most recently, from 2010, he held the role of account manager at Wärtsilä with responsibility for both new business development and after sales service in the offshore market. These are already strong areas with further growth potential for Schottel in North America. Aucoin holds a master degree in business administration and 15-years of experience in the North American maritime sector.

Wärtsilä Intermodal Pact with VR Group

The technology group Wärtsilä and VR Group, a national railway operator owned by the Finnish State, deepen their partnership as Wärtsilä begins to recondition the engines of diesel locomotives. The agreement significantly extends the previous relationship between the companies. For VR Group, the agreement ensures professional and flexible maintenance and reconditioning services of its diesel locomotives. Under this agreement, Wärtsilä will be in charge of reconditioning and test running of over 200 diesel engines on 191 locomotives of three different types.

Wärtsilä Designs Deepwater DSV for China

Wärtsilä has signed a contract with Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design Co Ltd to design a new type of deepwater dive support vessel (DSV). The ship is to be built for China state-owned Shanghai Salvage Bureau (SSB), a professional salvage company in China. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in January. The Wärtsilä design features a combination of capabilities, including deepwater (6,000 meters) salvage operations, deepwater pipe laying and construction work, and saturation (SAT) diving operations for 24 divers using two diving bells.

Sovcomflot Pushes for LNG-fuelled Vessels

SCF Group's Sovcomflot sees bright future for LNG-fuelled vessels in the tanker industry. "LNG is a promising fuel for large-capacity vessels, which will significantly increase their environmental compatibility and efficiency," says the company. As the world’s leader in the Aframax tanker segment, Sovcomflot is pioneering the conversion of this class of vessel to LNG as a fuel. SCF Group signed a bunkering agreement with Shell for the supply of gas engine fuel for SCF’s Aframax tankers that are specially designed to run on LNG.

The Wärtsilä 50DF marine engine has been tested and certified to run on ethane (LEG) fuel. The testing program was carried out by Wärtsilä in close collaboration with Evergas, an owner and operator of seaborne petrochemical and liquid gas transport vessels. "We are very pleased that the Wärtsilä engines will be capable of utilizing ethane boil-off gas as fuel. It increases our operational efficiency and improves flexibility in the bunkering of fuels. All in all it results in a significant reduction in operating costs, while also providing a minimal environmental footprint.

The 5-cylinder, 500 mm bore, Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF engine employing X-DF technology is installed as the main engine driving a single propeller in the Ternsund, a low emissions 15,000 DWT chemical tanker. Finland's Manga LNG Terminal Gets First Cargo

The first shipload of liquefied natural gas (LNG) arrival to the LNG import terminal in Tornio, Finland, on Sunday November 19, 2017. The Manga LNG natural gas import terminal in Röyttä Harbor, Tornio, is a joint venture of the industrial companies Outokumpu and SSAB Europe, the energy company EPV Energy and the LNG company Skangas. LNG was shipped to the terminal by Coral Energy, a time-chartered LNG carrier operated by Skangas. Once completed in summer 2018, the import terminal will be the largest LNG terminal in the Nordic countries and the second LNG terminal in Finland.

Wärtsilä to Equip US LNG Fueling Barge

Wärtsilä said it will provide a broad scope of products and solutions for a new articulated tug barge (ATB) that will be used to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel to cruise ships along the east coast of Florida, U.S. The 4,000 m3 capacity ATB is being built at the VT Halter Marine (VTHM) shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. on behalf of Quality Liquefied Natural Gas Transport LLC (Q-LNG). When delivered, the vessel will be on a long-term charter with Shell Oil Co. The barge will be fitted with a Wärtsilä LNG cargo storage, handling and control system.

Gasum, Wärtsilä Join Forces to develop Gas Value Chain

New joint co-operation between Gasum and Wärtsilä aims to develop the utilization and distribution of natural energy gases in marine and land markets. Unlocking New LNG Transfer Possibilities

Cryogenic hose technology is driving a rethink of LNG transfer in bunkering – and beyond. Many backers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, as well as wider industry stakeholders, have for a while now suggested that it will soon enjoy exponential growth as a future bunker fuel. There are several factors behind this; the increasing number of emissions control areas (ECAs) requiring bunker fuel of 0.1 percent sulphur (SOx) to be burnt near coastal areas where the burning of dirtier heavy fuel oil (HFO) is forbidden.

Wärtsilä to Proceed with first LNG Terminal

Wärtsilä has been given full notice to proceed (NTP) from Manga LNG Oy for the supply of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Tornio, Northern Finland. Wärtsilä will commence construction on the site near the port of Tornio in January 2015. Manga LNG Oy is a joint venture of Outokumpu Group, Svenskt Stål AB (SSAB), Skangass and EPV Energy Ltd. Wärtsilä initially announced this project in January 2014. The order, valued at approximately EUR 100 million, will be included in Wärtsilä's order intake in December 2014.

Oslo based BW Fleet Management have chosen to sign a 3 year “BuyerLink” Service contract with EVRY, to use the MarineLink Service and run in parallel with their other eCommence providers who integrates directly with their Oracle EBS Purchasing application. BW Fleet Management has used the MarineLink service for many years for transactions with Wilhelmsen Ships Service, Alfa Laval and engine manufacturer Wärtsilä. However, this year they decided to split their eCommerce between two service providers, MarineLink from EVRY, being one of the winning suppliers.

Wärtsilä Propulsion Solution for 3 Tugs

Three large new escort tugs contracted by Norwegian operator Østensjø Rederi, will feature Wärtsilä dual-fuel (DF) engines integrated with a customized gas storage and supply system also supplied by Wärtsilä. The tugs will operate primarily on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) but the Wärtsilä DF engines provide the flexibility to select the most suitable fuel according to availability, price and local environmental restrictions. The contract for the Wärtsilä solution was signed in December 2014.
